Kevin Orr’s first involvement with Wheelchair Rugby came at the University of Illinois where as a student he competed in basketball and track. Even though he was ineligible as a player he was keen to jump in a chair and fill out numbers for the up and coming Illinois rugby team. After taking a job at Lakeshore Foundation he founded the Lakeshore Demolition where he coached them from 1992- 2009.

Starting with only 5 players Kevin was driven to build a rugby program that would be competitive and help show those who play how sports and life go hand and hand. They gradually improved over the years competing in the Atlantic Region that boasted some of the UQRA’s top teams. After barely missing Nationals in 1995, his Demolition finally broke through in 1996 finishing 6thin their first Nationals appearance.

In 1996 he founded the Lakeshore Demolition Derby tournament which added a top flight tournament to the rugby season. Through this event he would eventually introduce the 40 second shot clock. This innovation was ahead of its time and eventually gained more and more acceptance. It was eventually adopted by the UQRA and later would be adopted by the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation (IWRF) and the game of Rugby was forever changed.

In 1998 the Demolition made their first  USQRA’s National Championship game and finished 2nd in a close match with defending champs Sharp. The following season Kevin took his team to the championship game once again and this time would be victorious and win their first National Championship title. He would continue to coach the Demolition team to 5 consecutive titles and 10 straight appearances in the finals which is a record that stands today.

Kevin was selected to Coach his first developmental USA National team squad to compete in the 1999 World Wheelchair games. Despite playing countries with true National team squads Kevin coached his team to win Gold.

Four of his Demolition players would make the 2000 Paralympic Team that also brought home Gold. In 2002 Kevin was selected to Coach the USA National team that was narrowly defeated in the World championship game to end up with a Silver Medal. Orr was selected to Coach the Athens 2004 team that would win the bronze medal at the Paralympic games.

With Kevin’s spirited coaching he has produced not only record championships but also made Hall of Famers out of four of his players. (Wayne, Cliff, Eddie, Bryan)

Kevin served as an instructor at several instructional clinics throughout the US. He also worked with new start up teams within the Heartland and Atlantic Region.  He served as USQRA Commissioner 2000-01 and USQRA Vice President 2002-05. Along with hostingthe annual

Demolition Derby, he also served as a Tournament Director at several National Tournaments hosted by Lakeshore.

In 2009 Kevin took a head Coaching job with the Canadian W/C Rugby Team where he quickly turned into a contender for the top teams in the world. His team gave the 2010 USA team a scare in pool play as the US had to come from four down to win. Orr coached Team Canada in the 2012 Paralympic and 2016 Paralympic Games. He has since parted ways with Canada and is now coaching Team Japan who will host The 2020 Paralympics.
